Anton J Mizera
One of the finer examples of Old
Geezerdom in central Texas is Mont Store, established in 1909 and still going
strong... well, pretty strong. Well... strong enough anyway. It has been in the
family for years with Anton's father, Anton L. running the store before Anton
J., the present owner. The store is a gathering place for workers heading home
after a day's work for a quick one, and to catch up on the latest cattle prices
or the amount of rainfall last night. Because of the remoteness of Mont. Anton
doesn't open up until 5 PM when he can catch the after-work crowd. Don't come on
Sunday.
To get there, just take FM 318 west from Hallettsville or east from Yoakum. If you can find Sweet Home take 318 east from there. It's well worth the trip for the conversation and the cold beer.
